New Delhi, July 18: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has dismissed speculation that Sunday’s third ODI against England at Lord’s will be Rohit Sharma’s final international appearance.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia clarified that there has been no discussion about the match being a farewell for the former India captain. He said Rohit will continue to represent the national team “as long as he is in the scheme of things.”
The clarification came after reports suggested the selectors were planning to move on from the veteran opener following the ongoing ODI series, raising doubts over his future and his hopes of playing the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
While the BCCI has ruled out an immediate farewell, the statement stops short of guaranteeing Rohit’s place in future squads. His selection for upcoming ODI assignments is expected to depend on form, fitness and the selectors’ long-term plans.
Rohit, who retired from Test cricket in 2025, now plays only the ODI format for India. The 39-year-old remains one of India’s most successful white-ball batters and captained the side to multiple ICC tournament campaigns.
However, with younger openers such as Shubman Gill firmly established and Yashasvi Jaiswal pushing for opportunities, competition for places has intensified.
India will face England in the series-deciding third ODI at Lord’s on Sunday, with Rohit’s performance likely to remain under close scrutiny as discussions over his international future continue.
