Star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu secured India’s first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, dominating the women’s 48kg category. The 31-year-old registered a record-breaking total lift of 190kg, setting new Commonwealth Games records in both the snatch (85kg) and clean and jerk (105kg). This marks her third consecutive CWG gold medal following her victories in 2018 and 2022.
Weightlifting & Boxing Highlights:
- Weightlifting Silvers: Chanambam Rishikanta Singh earned silver in the men’s 60kg event with a total lift of 264kg. Raja Muthupandi added another silver in the men’s 65kg event, lifting a combined total of 286kg.
- Boxing Success: Boxers Jadumani Singh (men’s 55kg) and Preeti Pawar (women’s 54kg) advanced to the quarter-finals after victories over Pakistan’s Sumama Rehman and Malawi’s Deborah Mtenje, respectively.
India’s total medal tally currently stands at four (1 Gold, 2 Silver, 1 Bronze), with para-powerlifter Jhandu Kumar having opened the tally with a bronze on the opening day. High-ranking leaders, including President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, extended their congratulations to Mirabai Chanu for her remarkable feat.
