Bangladesh opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim created history on Friday by becoming the first Bangladeshi batter to score a Test century in Australia.
The 25-year-old achieved the landmark during the first Test against Australia at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin. Playing only his second Test match, Tanzid reached his century from 188 balls, hitting eight fours and one six in a composed innings.
Tanzid had been given a crucial reprieve on 62 when he edged Nathan Lyon to first slip, but Australia’s Steve Smith was unable to hold on to the sharp chance. The Bangladesh opener made the most of the opportunity and brought up his historic hundred with a push through mid-off against Lyon.
His innings ended shortly afterwards when he attempted to attack Lyon again but was caught by Mitchell Starc at deep mid-off. The Bangladesh camp celebrated the milestone enthusiastically.
Tanzid had resumed the second day on 47 alongside Mominul Haque, with Bangladesh starting at 96/1 after Australia were bowled out for 198 on the opening day. He reached his half-century from 102 balls before continuing his steady knock.
Mominul also looked set for a half-century but was dismissed for 49 after edging Josh Hazlewood to wicketkeeper Alex Carey. The pair had added 102 runs, taking Bangladesh to 138/2.
Tanzid’s historic century gives Bangladesh a significant boost as they chase their first-ever Test victory in Australia.
